Inner Wheel and IMPACT in partnership:
IMPACT Family Health
Inner Wheel Clubs are working together with IMPACT to implement the IMPACT Family Health project; bringing maternity care, clean water, sanitation, food security, immunisation and medical care to poor families living in a deprived rural area of Bangladesh. Together, we hope to raise at least £26,000 to help five villages. This action will prevent the ill-health and needless disability which causes unnecessary suffering and keeps people in poverty by stopping them from working or going to school.
Did You Know?
-
In the poorest areas of Bangladesh, more than one in every eight children die before their fifth birthday? Providing clean water, sanitation and healthcare will help to protect them.
-
Four-fifths of pregnant women give birth alone or without medical help? The IMPACT Family Health project would train and equip Traditional Birth Attendants to keep women and babies safe from harm.
-
Lack of Vitamin A is a leading cause of child blindness yet only tiny amounts of this micronutrient are needed? Together we can help malnourished people grow vegetables to protect their children's sight.
-
Only a third of men, women and children in rural areas have appropriate sanitation? Potentially fatal diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera spread rapidly in such conditions.
IMPACT Family Health aims to address issues such as these directly with cost-effective and simple strategies.
Making motherhood safer for women and babies - death and damage to labouring mothers and newborns is clearly linked to giving birth without medical assistance. Few women in rural Bangladesh have such help so through this project we could train Traditional Birth Attendants (unskilled midwives working locally) and provide sterile equipment kits; run Mother and Baby clinics for ante and postnatal care; immunise young girls against Rubella (German measles) so they do not contract the disease while pregnant in later life; and surgically repair women damaged by fistula.
Clean water, sanitation and food security - together we could install wells for clean water and toilets; provide arsenic filters (arsenic contamination of water is a huge problem in parts of Bangladesh since it is present in underground rocks); and help families to establish kitchen gardens to provide free nutritious vegetables to eat.
Spotting the early signs of disability and providing medical care - in the developing world, many people are needlessly disabled for life because they could not access medical care for treatable conditions. Through IMPACT Family Health project, the poorest local people could be examined and provided with medical treatment before their conditions deteriorate. With your support we could also train teachers to check students for health conditions such as sight and hearing loss; and provide schools with First Aid kits to prevent infection from cuts.

"The IMPACT Foundation is celebrating its
silver jubilee this coming year. Having supported this wonderful charity for
several years and seen its work in Bangladesh nine years ago, I was keen to
recommend this ‘IMPACT Family Health’ project in five villages in western
Bangladesh.
Clean safe water provision, early recognition of ear and eye problems, maternity
care improvement, immunisations and simple hygiene measures will hopefully make
the lives of all the 25,000 inhabitants that much healthier.
Our International Inner Wheel President has asked us to “Commit with conviction,
compassion and consistency”. This project will show all these and our support of
it will show Inner Wheel at its best."
