Disability is a prime cause and consequence of poverty, yet so often the causes are preventable.
It is a serious factor in underdevelopment, with implications for the conservation of human life, the environment and resources. However, as the burden of disability is lightened, the economic prospects for individuals, their communities and nations improve.
IMPACT is convinced that prevention of needless disability is therefore one of the most cost-effective means of poverty alleviation.
The challenge is not only to reduce poverty, but also to eradicate the inequalities that perpetuate it. We believe that access to knowledge and technology that can prevent disability is a fundamental human right and priority.
The Individual IMPACT
Bobby lives in rural Bangladesh. She was encouraged by IMPACT to establish a home garden to grow fruit and vegetables to provide her family with a nutritious diet. Bangladesh is a fertile country and soon Bobby had a surplus of produce which she decided to sell at market.
With the income she received, Bobby has been able to buy 10 chickens which she is now rearing. These provide eggs and have added protein to the family’s diet. Again, any surplus eggs are sold along with her vegetables to generate income that will purchase more livestock. This is slowly helping Bobby to lift her family out of extreme poverty and improving their health into the bargain.
